Dirt Rag Reviews the SCOTT JR RC 24

Dirt Rag Issue #116

“I knew the day would come when I would be telling him to wait for me. One bad thing is that now, that time will come sooner than I like.” Dirt Rag Magazine’s Mark Sauers, commenting on the advantage the SCOTT RC 24 gave his son Alec during testing.

The senior management at SCOTT saw that they needed something for their own kids to ride. In the day of video games and cable TV, they felt kids needed a healthy alternative, and what could be better than a bike?

Enter the SCOTT RC 24, a high quality, lightweight bike built for kids. This isn’t your typical kids’ bike. It sure beat the Huffy I had years ago. The SCOTT RC 24 weighs in at just 23 lbs., and comes with Shimano M-520 clipless pedals.

I wanted to get an idea of the impact a light bike would have on my son’s riding. We rode the bike on our local parks’ singletrack. We also took it out on the rails-to-trails. I was surprised that he was able to ride 5 to 6 miles of solid singletrack in one day, knowing how he used to ride these same trails on his personal bike. At just eight years of age, I didn’t expect him to do 3-hour rides with me. I was quite happy to get a good hour on singletrack.

He was able to ride longer and harder trails than previously with the lighter bike. He attempted parts of the trail he wouldn’t have before. He had a few wrecks, but as I see it, like father like son. He seemed to have more fun, and he even won a race on it.

Now Alec wants to ride his own bike more than riding the tandem with me. I can’t tell you what a pleasure it was to ride off-road with my son.

The Scott RC 24 has given Alec the ability to ride longer, harder singletrack (my goal) and have more fun (both our goals).
